Snow Day Fun

On Thursday, a snowstorm with strong winds hit our area so the kids got out of school at 11:30.  I was concerned about what to do to make it a productive day, but I think it turned out okay.  Here are some of the highlights:

Brock, James, and Jessica walked home with David, Sarah, and Michael so they could have violin lessons right away.  They all played together when it wasn’t their turn for a lesson.

Michael and I made mulberry jam and canned it to free up some freezer space for the half-hog we should be getting soon.  He was very good at measuring, smashing, and stirring.  He also wiped the jar tops carefully and put the lids on well.

Because it was April 18, we had to read Paul Revere’s Ride!  Sarah made a little timeline with the Boston Tea Party (1773), Paul Revere’s Ride (1775) and the Declaration of Independence (1776) for our lapbook.  Michael studied the map of the routes and riders, explained them to everyone who would listen, and glued pictures into the lapbook.  David did math story problems relating to the ride.

The kids also did some science experiments with baking soda and vinegar.  David used the reaction to fill a balloon with carbon dioxide.  Putting baking soda into the balloon

First, he filled a bottle with vinegar, then used a funnel to fill the balloon with baking soda.  He dyed the vinegar red to make it more interesting…

When he flipped the balloon over, the reaction started and the balloon inflated!

Later in the evening, Sarah remembered that she wanted to bring ale bread for show and tell the next day.  While I put Paul to bed, she mixed up everything but the ale because we were out of all fizzy clear drinks.  We ran to the gas station to get a can of Sprite, and she finished up the bread all by herself!  She even printed out a copy of the recipe to share in class.

I’m sure there was more to the day, but those are the highlights.  We enjoyed our snow day!
